The One That You Date

So I stumbled upon my college professor’s travel blog who posted an article about “Don’t Date a Boy Who Travels” inspired by “Date a Boy Who Travels” which in turn was inspired by a blog about “Date a Girl Who Travels” which was in turn inspired by…. yes, the list goes on and on.. Needless to say, here I am inspired to write about “Date a Girl Who Climbs Mountains”.

I was originally going for the sarcastic route and write: don’t date a girl who climbs mountains, she’ll regularly feel insecure about her toenails. But then, I realized any girl who can withstand a 14-hour continuous trekking, half of it under a boiling sun, is pretty awesome, I just thought I’d just write why you really should date a mountaineer.

Date a girl who climbs mountains. She might walk faster than you on land, but will never leave you on the trail. She won’t be turned off by mud, dirt or even boulders that get in her way because like obstacles in life, she knows how to work her way around it. She can endure a 4-day traverse lugging a 40L backpack; she’ll also stick with you and not give up on you when the going gets tough.

Date a girl who knows and is comfortable and accepts her limitations but embraces challenges. She may not look that physically tough on the outside as she really is on the inside but she knows how to appreciate your helping hand and will be grateful instead of prideful. The summit is always her goal, though she knows that sometimes it’s not always possible but also that it’s not something to be discouraged about, because she knows that the important thing really is the climb itself.

When you date a girl who climbs mountains, you never need to impress her with fancy candlelight dinners because the outdoors is at your use, the stars your light. Never mind the expensive gifts, she will be more delighted if you give her a meaningful wooden bracelet she can easily wear or something as simple but as useful as a bandana  or buy her a zip lock she can use.

You never need to wait for her, because she knows the importance of being on time. She can dress and prepare under 5 minutes and is comfortable in anything that she wears.

She gets joy from the simple things in life, the beauty of nature. She wonders happily at the soft rumble of the river. She’s seen countless sunrise and sunset on top of a mountain, but will still get excited at the thought of seeing another one from wherever you may take her.

She might have already been on top of the highest mountain of South East Asia, or trudged through dangerous knife-edge ridges or trekked the rice terraces, and she will want more but when she loves you she’ll think of you and be inspired by you on her way up. She’ll think of you as she reaches the top and gaze down the view and marvel at the thought that you share the same sky.

Listen to her stories, or better yet go with her and let her push you out of your comfort zone. Because when you date a girl who climbs mountains, every day is an adventure.

Especially love the last line! “Listen to her stories, or better yet go with her and let her push you out of your comfort zone.
